We used to have Quakes. When the family was large, and the birthday cakes were gobbled up almost before they could even make it to the table, I made a layer cake with two 13x9 cakes. The trouble is that both cakes rise in the middle. When 2 are stacked, and then weighted with frosting, the top layer cracks. It looked more like a fissure. No amount of frosting could hide or fix it.

You mean you didn't take the time to level off the tops before stacking?! Cake doesn't have to be pretty -- it's delicious, and that is good enough for me!
