Target had Downton Abbey, original UK Edition and I've seen the first 2 shows. There are A LOT of characters in this show!!!!
It was interesting that the first show started off with the Titanic event involved. The Titanic's 100th anniversary has been big news around here. It sets the time period.
I've been a bit confused about Mr Bates. I thought he was let go at the end of the first show but he was back with a major contribution in the second show. He's also listed in the servants "family tree"
Can't imagine having someone dress me. Ewww! At the same time, it might be nice to have my clothes cleaned and pressed and have someone do my hair before going out. That would take up an awful lot of time!!! They are doing that every day, all day. Why weren't they bored? Plus they took a very dim view of Matthew Crawley's desire to work, as if ALL work is very low class. The fact that he was doing it by choice or the concept of any nobility existing within a profession was nonexistent.
The whole idea of women not being able to inherit is astonishing. They were still in Downton Abbey for Season 2 so something must have been figured out. Please do not tell me what's happened.
Servants work HARD for a living!

I can answer your question about Bates. He was let go, but then Master Crawley had a change of heart and couldn't watch him go. It happened pretty fast at the end of the episode, and it wasn't entirely clear. He basically told Bates, "Go back inside and forget this ever happened."

Thanks Amanda! Bate's sobbing was a real killer.

Out of everyone? Why?
I love watching Maggie Smith. Her expressions at the end of the second show after the anouncement that Isobel Crawley was made chairwoman of the hospital board were an absolute treasure.

Amanda probably can't tellyou why Bates is her favourite without giving away part of the plot, but she's certainly not alone. I'm so glad you're watching the series and look forward to discussing it when you're done.
oohhh it's so tempting to want to tell you what's coming! Maggie Smith has THE best lines!!

Meggie's right. Bates is a character that slowly and steadily grew on me.
And I probably should have said EXCEPT for Maggie Smith -- because she cracks me up!
