It looks like Spotlight is a movie worth watching. The Boston Globe is one of my favorite news sources.

I haven't seen it but friends that have raved about it. It is definitely on my list to see. Tonight, My book club went to see The Lady in the Van starring Maggie Smith. It was a funny, sad, poignant movie. Maggie Smith deserves an Oscar for her portrayal and we all loved it!!!

Maggie Smith is amazing. The whole entire world must love her. She is the spice of Downton Abbey that gives the whole thing its flavor.

I assume The Lady in the Van is a book that you read first? I haven't heard of it, but will add it to my list if it was good!

Also, I will be curious to hear how you like Spotlight. I am afraid to watch it because I'm not sure how explicit it may be or how upsetting. It's obviously a very upsetting topic.

No, Amanda, we hadn't read the book. It was just a group outing for a six ladies that love Maggie Smith and dinner, not necessarily in that order. The movie has just come out in wide release here after a couple of weeks at the arty theatre. It was a lovely movie, no aliens, zombies or shoot 'em ups, with amazing acting.
Apparently, Spotlight is now out in video on demand, as well as Brooklyn if you haven't seen it.

All The President's Men is basically about the detective work and challenges that it took for two reporters to accurately uncover and document the truths. This was a respected news paper. Everything had to be credible. There was no room for sensationalism or libelous drama. If anything, I would expect a look into the hierarchy of the church an its political system. Spotlight has been compared to this movie so this is what I would expect. Spotlight is currently being sold in Costco. There is a trailer on line which does support this line of thought.

Today The Boston Globe is running a list of their articles they ran in their investigation into the scandal. bostonglobe.com is their link. If you start clicking on articles you might get a deal for 4 weeks of The Globe @ $.99 per week. They will up the subscription price at the end of that, but you can call them to stop it if you wish. When you subscribe, you get their customer service phone number.
I read one of the articles this AM. An offending priest was repeatedly sent into therapy, after which he was returned to a parish. When one of the bishops began vocal concerns about this, that bishop was quickly reassigned to a position in Texas. The church was paying wads of money to the victims' families and making efforts to keep everything quiet. It is disturbing because there is knowledge and awareness that this priest is continually behaving inappropriately but there is no prurient discussion of that. ......... I was living while all of this was going on! I'm probably going to need to steel my stomach before watching this. Thank God for freedom of speech and for those whose mission is to support and seek the truths. ..... We have cell phones now which capture the truths when errant police abuse their powers. Our world is not perfect. In this country, we can address that.

I"d like to see Spotlight, but Charlie really doesn't want to, so guess I'll catch it on demand. Woman in the van is playing in our little cinema in the town center, so we may go see that. We also want to see the Big Short, which is also playing in Lex Center. If it's not at the local Venue Theater, we wait til it's on demand. :-) HATE multiplexes!!!
