I have a 2 disc set of Upstairs Downstairs with 3 episodes on it which I've just watched. It started with a couple, Sir Hallam and Lady Agnes, walking into a huge, long empty and neglected house to take possession of it and make it their home. Lady Agnes hires a staff of servants. The very controlling mother-in-law, Lady Holland moves in and the plots take off from there. Timing wise, they already have and use the wireless. I thought this was Season One, but, after a bit of searching think it probably is not. It isn't even a whole season.

The original Masterpiece Theatre Upstairs Downstairs was on in the 70's I think, and went on for years chronicling the life of the Bellamy family upstairs with Mr Hudson, Rose(Jean Marsh), Mrs. ?? the cook, and the rest of the staff downstairs. It was must watch on Sunday nights in the pre-vhs days.
I think the one you have is the new version and Jean Marsh's Rose is one of the servants hired. If I remember correctly, it wasn't many episodes. It just wasn't the same for me & I only watched the first couple.

There's a 'new' version? In this one, Rose, is the house's former parlor maid. Lady Agnes hired her to recruit the servants. The DVD box clearly states BBC and Masterpiece. It also has the '2 entertain' logo on it.

Yes, in the original Upstairs Downstairs, Rose was the parlour maid, and from what I remember, she was on from the very beginning. I just checked it out on Wikipedia, and Jean Marsh was actually one of the creators of the original series & it was on for 68 episodes. I don't know if the original is available but it was wonderful.
