I have a recipe for puffins that I've not made in a very long time. They are good with blueberries and it is blueberry season here now. A work crew will be showing up and my plans were to make the puffins but the recipe calls for 1/3 cup shortening (animal fat). What else can be used as a substitute that would be just as delicious?

I don't know what your puffins are, but most shortening is vegetable. If it's animal, lard or butter should work as the fat. (Now to google 'puffins'....)

David ate puffin in Iceland, but I didn't know they were available here. They're so cute, I don't know as I could eat one!

^^^That was what I was thinking of, too, KarenK. ;)Guess she needs the shortening to fry the cute little things. A blueberry glaze does sound yummy but I doubt there's much meat on them to feed a hungry work crew. Wonder what market sells them in MA?

Whole Foods? I can assure you they're not sold at my farmers' market!

I found a recipe for puffins:
Remove feathers, soak in milk for three days to remove oil. Fry meat, salt and pepper to taste.
Who knew???

My son may be the least picky eater I've ever known. Puffin nuggets, anyone?

How do they get them into those little squares?
You're a good sport, Ruff!
My mom bought those for my nephew when he visited. Only problem? They had flown in from France via Iceland and spent a day touring Iceland, so he had seen actual puffins. He was only about 3 at the time and it was really hard to convince him that that was breakfast cereal, not ground up cute little birds.
I think you might be able to find them at Trader Joes? Or the "organic" section of S&S? Give it a try, my mother got them somewhere!

Ruff may be a good sport but I honestly still have no idea what her puffins are! I looked up puffin recipes and they are some sort of baked good but there weren't any pictures and the ingredients aren't exactly muffins or biscuits. Enlighten me, please. The blueberry bushes I planted last year are producing fruit like mad and I'd love an interesting way to use them.

You're right, meggie, Ruff said she was going to "make" Puffins, not buy breakfast cereal.
Ruffles, you have some 'splainin' to do!
